Quick tips to improve your reading skills

i. Enjoy reading: Encourage yourself to read by choosing a topic or genre you would like to read or read about. If you are making a conscious effort as an adult to rejuvenate or cultivate a strong and regular reading habit, this step is very important. As a starter, you should enjoy reading extensively! This is to ensure that you read considerably every day.

ii. Read aloud: Reading aloud creates double impact — the material is absorbed by the eyes as well as the ears. Reading aloud

a. builds your vocabulary

b. helps increase your attention span

c. enhances your cognitive skills

d. helps you improve your pronunciation

iii. Begin with extensive reading. This will give you a sense of satisfaction that you have read a considerable volume of text as you do not stop to check the dictionary or internet to know the meaning of a particular word or expression. Moreover, extensive reading will also give you an overall, cohesive idea of what you read; for example, if you are attempting to read a novella in a single sitting, you will be successful by performing extensive reading.

iv. Set reading goals: Set goals for yourself in terms of the number of pages or articles or books you can read. This will give you a fair idea of how you are building your reading skills. You also become more mindful of your improvement in the area.

v. Track your progress: This is as important as reading itself. Maintaining a list of items you have completed reading will actually encourage you to read more. Also important is for you to recollect and enlist the new words that you have encountered, the plots that you have read, the data you have collected and the information and knowledge you have gained. This exercise will enhance your memory, enrich your vocabulary, and augment your knowledge.

After all this, would you still doubt the efficacy of your communication skills?
